Multi domain hosting indicates hosting of multiple websites under one account opened by the client with the provider. It does not mean that some dedicated web hosting service is necessary for the purpose. Such practices could be adopted on a shared web hosting service as well.
Methods Used for Multi Domain Hosting
It is possible conducting multiple web hosting with one account in various ways. One of the simplest and widely used methods is redirection. In such cases the host will create a sub directory of the original domain of the client and provide it with another name. New domain thus created would point to the sub directory though coming under the parent account of the user. Since in multi domain hosting the user will not have any separate email, FTP, or such accounts for the sub domain, this type of web hosting should only be adopted in case of those having networks of domain for the same administrative requirements. In such cases no separate control panel would be required for each of the domains. Similarly, if the user's website contains multiple domains then also this method would be useful. In real multi domain website hosting the user will get separate control panels for each of the domains having separate login, email id, tools and separate disc space allocated by the provider. Data transfer quotas for each of domain would be specified as well. While the task is more labor intensive for both the administration and maintenance with divergent requirements for the domains hoisted, the advantages gained are the flexibility, security, and clarity. It is also possible setting up multiple domain housing reseller accounts and obtain such control panels from the provider and enabling the user to reallocate part or full of his domains to other users in lieu of payments made to that effect.
